Make Your Own Arcade Space Shooter

GameMakerGameMakerBeginner

GameMaker's official beginner tutorial: build an Asteroids-style shooter from the Space Rocks template, in GML Code or GML Visual.

Short preview clip from the GameMaker tutorial page, streamed from GameMaker's own servers.

Make Your Own Arcade Space Shooter is one of GameMaker's official beginner tutorials. You build your own version of Asteroids, starting from the Space Rocks template that ships with GameMaker, so the sprites are ready for you.

Every step is shown in both GML Code and GML Visual, GameMaker's drag-and-drop actions. GameMaker's own getting-started guide lists it among its 15-minute first games, and it's a good first project before a platformer or RPG.

What it covers

  • Create a project from the Space Rocks template
  • Make objects and give them sprites
  • Move and rotate the ship in the Step event
  • Fire bullets and make rocks explode
  • Finish the game and rack up points
