Apex Legends blogging with Apoth0r? Based on the Battle Chasers comic book series which ran during the late ’90s and into the early 2000s, Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a turn-based RPG that originally launched on console and PC a couple of years ago. But as with many mobile ports, the game actually feels most at home on the touchscreen, and as someone who doesn’t love turn-based RPGs I can’t believe how much I enjoyed playing through this when it hit the App Store over the summer. No knowledge of the comic books is necessary to enjoy the characters and story here either, and even knowing it’s a port of an existing game it’s hard not to be impressed playing a game with this amount of depth and such a high level of quality on a mobile device.
Oddmar is a platformer from 2019. It’s by the same developer’s of Leo’s Fortunte, another excellent platformer that spent years on this very list. Oddmar tells the story of a disgraced viking looking to redeem himself in the eyes of his village. The actual game play super smooth and enjoyable. Additionally, the game comes with 24 levels, a 3-star scoring system for replay value, and hardware controller support for play on Android TV or just on a controller. It’s not the longest game, but it’s a complete game and we felt the developer’s earned our $4.49 by the time we got to the end.
As we ascend to the fifth spot on the list, we get greeted with the first Dota 2 player, Anathan “ana” Pham, who has finished the year with just under $3.15 million in his pockets. This is the second year in a row when we see ana among the top five earners, thanks to his achievements with OG Dota 2 roster, which repeated their success from last year and won their second successive International title. By winning TI9, OG earned $15,620,181, which split five-ways earned each player $3.124 million. Seeing him among the top five solely because he won one tournament, however, should not come off as a shock to anyone, considering that since 2011, a player who won The International was guaranteed to finish the year among top five earners, due to massive prize pools that have become a staple for the biggest Dota 2 tournament of the year. When you do your 10 placement matches at the beginning of the season, you’ll be given a rank. This number, referred to as your Skill Rating (SR), will place you in a colored tier. You might get lucky and get a decent placement in Silver, but you also might end up in the dreaded Bronze tier, which is anything below 1,500 SR. There’s nothing wrong with getting a low placement. It just means you have to get better! However, you’ll need to focus on a few key areas. First of all, it pays to pick a role and stick with it. I would go into Quick Play and try out a number of characters to see what suits you best. Are you the kind of player who throws your character into the middle of the action, or do you prefer a supportive role? It’s important to focus on a particular set of characters as you practice, so you can become a master of one thing instead of a jack of all trades.
Platinum is where microphones start to play a major factor. People here have gotten out of the bottom 50%, so reaching the >15% of Diamond and above starts to seem like a tangible goal. Here, you’ll see people strategizing based on maps, game modes, and enemy team compositions. Players will save their Ultimate abilities, waiting to combine them with those of their teammates, and will know exactly when to join a fight and – more importantly – when to back down. Diamond houses about 10% of Overwatch’s player base at any given time. It’s a big upgrade from Platinum, as Platinum is still adjacent to Gold in the ranking system. Once you reach Diamond, you’ll rarely come across players who don’t use their microphone, text chat, or the command wheel. Here, teams who don’t work together will inevitably lose, plummeting back down the ladder to Platinum.
